Ever since the band's conception the buzz was loud and clear. "This band is gonna be funky!" Hot Buttered Rhythm's founder and 1 of 2 drummers, Brannen Temple (see resume page) had this idea to assemble the ultimate rhythm section with some of the best musicians Texas has to offer. (See resume page). "I was home from touring and was so happy to see my musician friends I wanted to play with all of them." Sure enough, he did it. In fact he ended up with a "Noah's Ark" of rhythm... 2 keyboardist, 2 bassist and 2 drummers!

This highly improvisational "double trio" has power but never squelches on musicality. These jazzers are versatile and use all of their skills to come up with some of the most infectious funk/jazz grooves and melodies.

'BLACKSOUNDSPLOITATION' (BVM2-1992-1) is the band's current release. (9/01) This CD contains over an hour's worth of original compositions. "We've come a long way since the beginning and are trying to focus on creating solid ideas in the form of melodic but gritty material. Our aspirations, like a lot of folks, is to merge our influences with the sounds we're dealing with today." They have continued to capture the raw energy, style and approach they take performing five shows. Tunes like "Yin's Yang" set up the band's funk/jazz double trio concept with its simple 3 bar melody over a 6/8 or 4/4 vamp, depending how you count it. The funk rhythm soon morphs into a 3 over 4 subdivision gliding into postmodern bop. Other songs are closer to strait funk with hip-hop beats like "Dirty (Oo-Oo-Oo)". " Jack Frost -Whippin' Up On 'Oat Behind" blends funk, rock, drum-n-bass and a wall of sound to create fire and excitement.

It has been 4 years since the 1st release. The mostly live recorded, self- titled 'Hot Buttered Rhythm' (BV021997-2) sold well and gained the attention of the likes of Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Lenny Kravitz and others. HBR has also had the privilege to do some capacity shows with P-Funk, Big Ass Truck, Vallejo, MC Overlord, etc. Also, road shows have taken them to Canada and back (twice) playing NYC's Knitting Factory and other northeastern venues. HBR performed in the 1998 Montreal Jazz Festival and headlined Niagara-On- The- Lake's Hillebrand Jazz Festival the same year. Their talents have impressed upon and captivated audiences and they keep coming for more. Packed shows at The Mercury and at Steamboat 1874 (both in their home base of Austin, TX) proves this.

Hot Buttered Rhythm's tune "Black Cat" (Live) can be heard on a (local Austin, TX) benefit CO for the SIMS Foundation titled "A Day In The Life..." Proceeds benefit SIMS, an organization for musicians with alcohol/substance abuse and depression. HBR has also been featured on BET "Jazz Discoveries".
